Why it works: The butter and brown sugar boil into toffee that bakes into the crackers; the hot toffee melts the chips on top.

Ingredients

  • 35-40 saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup chopped pecans

Method

  1. Cover a 10x15-inch baking sheet in foil, spray the foil with cooking spray and heat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Cover the sheet with the 35-40 saltines, laid edge to edge in straight rows.
  3. Put the 1 cup butter and 1 cup brown sugar in a saucepan and set it on medium-high heat. When they have melted together, whisk and let it bubble for a few minutes.
  4. Pour the hot mixture over all the crackers and bake for 5 minutes.
  5. Straight out of the oven, scatter the 2 cups chocolate chips over the top. Give them a few minutes to soften.
  6. Spread the soft chocolate into one even layer and sprinkle the ½ cup chopped pecans over it.
  7. Leave it until it has set hard, then cut it into pieces.

June's tip: Let it harden completely before you cut it, and spread the chocolate only once the chips have softened.

Good to know: Salted saltines are the point: the salt against the toffee and chocolate is why it works.
